The jesters were famous for their masks. They wore them night after night, changing voices, gestures, and expressions to entertain the court. But with time, something strange happened: the masks began to cling to their faces. One became solemn, although he had once been the funniest of them all. Another learned to smile even when afraid. A third watched everyone through wide, alert eyes, no longer certain whether the face beneath the mask still belonged to him. Among them stood a woman whose mask seemed different. It did not hide her. It revealed something. Perhaps this was why the Sultan feared the jesters more than his enemies. They could make people laugh, but they could also expose what everyone else tried to conceal. And so, every evening, beneath the lights of the palace, the same question remained unanswered: Were they still wearing masks, or had the masks finally become their true faces? Povestea: „Paiatele sultanului” La curtea sultanului, nimeni nu mai știa unde se termina spectacolul și unde începea adevărul. Paiatele erau vestite pentru măștile lor. Le purtau seară de seară, schimbându-și vocile, gesturile și expresiile pentru a distra curtea. Dar, cu timpul, s-a întâmplat ceva straniu: măștile au început să li se lipească de chipuri. Unul a devenit solemn, deși fusese cândva cel mai vesel dintre ei. Altul a învățat să zâmbească chiar și atunci când îi era teamă. Un al treilea îi privea pe toți cu ochii larg deschiși, fără să mai știe dacă fața de sub mască îi mai aparținea cu adevărat. Printre ei se afla o femeie a cărei mască părea diferită. Nu o ascundea. Dimpotrivă, dezvăluia ceva. Poate tocmai de aceea sultanul se temea de paiate mai mult decât de dușmanii săi. Ele puteau să-i facă pe oameni să râdă, dar puteau și să arate ceea ce ceilalți încercau să ascundă. Și astfel, în fiecare seară, sub luminile palatului, aceeași întrebare rămânea fără răspuns: Mai purtau ele măști sau măștile deveniseră, în cele din urmă, adevăratele lor chipuri?
